THE WELSH DEPARTMENT.

We have three full time teachers in the department. Welsh as a second language is taught to all classes in key stages 3 and 4 – where pupils can opt for the full G.C.S.E. COURSE - and we also offer the subject at ‘AS and A’ level.

We are a very successful department. Departmental Inspections and Reviews praise our enthusiasm and the standard of our teaching. Our results at A/AS and G.C.S.E are always good, with a number of our pupils studying the subject at college/university. This is quite a feat, considering the fact that these boys have no Welsh speaking background.

We aim to enable as many pupils as possible to speak the language, to acquaint them with the culture of Wales, and to use Welsh as much as possible in everyday situations. It is therefore imperative that the lessons are enjoyable at all levels and that we establish a positive ethos in the classroom.

Pupils are encouraged to attend courses that will support and aid their learning. Pupils at Key Stages 4 / 5 are frequent visitors to Nant Gwrtheyrn and Glan Llyn in North Wales where they take advantage of the Welsh speaking atmosphere to improve their oral skills.
