Sociology

New for 2008 - 2009 !

What is sociology?

Sociology is a challenging and exciting discipline.   Sociologists try to make sense of how societies work.     Through investigating structures and cultures of different societies around the world and throughout history you will learn fabulous new perspectives, you will learn skills you can carry through life because you will have a greater idea of how society evolves and thrives.

This term we will be looking at how social class and the impact of status within society in all areas including health, education, crime and employment.  We will be moving on to other areas which will include your own research work into a subject related to society within your school.  You will learn how to conduct research and the differences between quantitative and qualitative information.  We will also be looking into methods of social control including the mass media.

I mentioned before about perspectives.  Well sociology should help you to understand some experiences in society.  It strives to give new ways of seeing the social world around you.  You will question aspects of it you had previously taken for granted. It can provide you with the skills which will allow you to become a better informed and more socially aware member of society.  Sociology is the best subject to consider at GCSE and A Level because of the amount of careers you can enter from it.  If you’re thinking about law, medicine, education, social work, media or politics then this is the subject for you.
