Reception Class' Allotment
  |
On May 6th
Reception Class paid their first visit to the local allotment. The
chairman of the allotment had kindly donated a plot for Pengam Primary
School to grow a variety of flowers and vegetables and Mr Cordell who
donates his time and plants every Friday afternoon is providing some
gardening expertise. |
| Pupils have planted
cabbages, lettuce, sunflowers, beetroot, strawberries, sweetcorn, pumpkins
and a variety of other flowers and vegetables. All this produce is grown
organically and we are about to acquire our own compost bin so that we can
make fertiliser.

  |
The children have
learnt how to plant seeds and also are able to transfer potted plants to
the plot. They have been
introduced to caring for plants in order for them to thrive, this work has
also been developed in the classroom through practical and written tasks. |
| Reception class
tend the plot in two separate groups of nine children as this ensures that
all pupils have the opportunity to carry out various roles – weeding,
planting, watering etc. |
  |
  |
Pupils have
developed a good rapport with Mr Cordell who is always willing to answer
all their questions and join them for a refreshing drink of water after al |
It is hoped that when the
produce is ripe the pupils will be able to cook and eat them as this will
enable them to have a proper appreciation of how fresh produce comes about
and is not something that is just bought in the supermarket!
