Statement

The teaching of Mathematics aims to
develop one way of teaching flexibility, initiative, accuracy, systematic
logical thinking and is a source of interest and fun. It should equip the
children for adult life. |

| Reception to Year Six.
The following framework, based on the National
Numeracy Strategy has five strands. These consist of a set of yearly
teaching programmes. Each year group follows a set of Key Objectives.

Numbers and the number system

Properties of numbers and number sequences,
including negative numbers. |
 | Place
value and ordering, including reading and writing numbers. |
 | Estimating
and rounding |
 | Fractions,
decimals and percentages, and their equivalence; ratio and proportion. |
Calculations
 | Understanding
number operations and relationships. |
 | Rapid
mental recall of number facts. |
 | Mental
calculations, including strategies for deriving new facts from known
facts. |
 | Pencil
and paper methods. |
 | Using
a calculator. |
 | Checking
the results of calculations are reasonable. |

Solving Problems
 | Making
decisions: deciding which operation and method of calculation to use
(mental, mental with jottings, pencil and paper, calculator…) |
 | Reasoning
about numbers or shapes and making general statements about them. |

problems involving numbers in context: “real life,” money,

 | Measures, including choosing units and reading

Organisation
At Pengam, our daily Numeracy lesson is based on the
National Numeracy Strategy. Mathematics lessons involve three parts An oral and
mental starter, a main teaching part and a plenary. One lesson each fortnight
will be given over to Problem solving.

The Maths Games and Puzzle Day – presented by Paul
Godding.
Extra-Curricular
Activities
None
at present but pupils are encouraged to use the Maths
games during wet play.
